The gastronomy & taste of Messinia, is based on a unique ingredient… Τhe Extra Virgin Olive Oil! The gastronomic journey begins in a small village, together with locals by tasting local goods, combining flavors and cooking with them traditional recipes of the area. Then, the local food culture is revealed through an interactive tour at the impressive cultural heritage center. The journey ends with plenty of wine, good company and the meal we have cooked!

Discover a local gastronomy Center

The gastronomic journey begins at the center of natural and cultural heritage Center in Karteroli, Messinia, located 12 km from the city of Kalamata and just 5 km from the airport. The stone building of 1910 reveals the gastronomic identity and history of the area.

Welcome!

The welcome from local hosts is made with a big smile, as if welcoming guests to their home.… We “bake” our Greek coffee and we share Greek stories as we get ready to prepare our meals in the gastronomy Lab.

Cook authentic local recipes!

All the flavor of the area is enclosed in simple, pure ingredients such as fresh vegetables and fruits, local cheese products and the extra virgin olive oil. We try local flavors and make our own bread. ..Then we prepare the famous tzatziki, the Cretan Dako, a traditional potato salad of Mani with orange and the local specialty Kayanas with fresh eggs, salt and sphela cheese.

Tasting of local products

While cooking, we learn about the local tradition and try 3 different varieties of extra virgin olive oil, local cheeses (feta, sphela, graviera), kalamata olives and olive paste, traditional lalagia and other local flavors.

Until our meal is “cooked” we discover the place that hosts us… The Natural and Cultural heritage center, through an interactive tour and a journey through time, reveals the evolution of the Greek diet and local gastronomy.

 The day full of new knowledge and emotions is completed with a “Sunday” meal with the dishes we have cooked, good company and music.
